Running Commentary: TNG

TOS served us well since 12/28/08. Time to turn to page.

Haven't given much thought to Sunday. Just one songwriter with a light resume, plus Red Norvo, Frankie Carle, Red Norvo & Paul Whiteman. Carle will be sideman records with McEnelly and Mal Hallett. Want to make sure I don't avoid Bing and Bix with Whiteman. I've tended to favor the 1931-35 Victor stuff. Maybe I have given some thought to Sunday.

On one of the remaining March Sundays, please consider adding a tribute to Scottish jazz trumbonist,
George Chisholm (3/29/1915 - 12/6/1997).

In 1938, he recorded with "Fats Waller in London":

In Holland, 1937, he recorded with Benny Carter, included in "The Alternative Takes: 1936-1937":

There's also the CD, "George Chisholm: Early Days 1935-1944":

(Since there's a maximum of 3 links/post, I'll continue on the next post.)

(George Chisholm, continued.)

In the CD box set, "George Shearing: Early Years" (1939-1946), Chisholm is part of many recordings. Whether he recorded with Shearing during the Big Broadcast era, or after, I'm not sure; for more info, on Amazon:

Hope I was of some help!

Thought I should move this up the queue (thanks, Netflix!) a bit.

I'm liking the show. For the thousandth time, I have a hard time predicting them, but...

No mystery. "Sunny Jim" was the mascot of "Force" cereal since the early 1900s.

"Force" sounds like a product that should be popular today--maybe they'll bring it back!

It's sold in the U.K., and guess who is on the package? :D

I'm glad you found that. No doubt, Nestle will have it back in the stores here before long.

Rich, you know that album "Those Wonderful Thirties: The Stars of Radio", you mentioned? I have it because you sent it to me 35 years ago and even wrote a little note on the cover. I must have played it as much as you did.
You don't want it back, do you? Just kidding, 'cause I don't think I could part with it. I just find it strange that they included a 1961 version of Vallee's "There is a Tavern in the Town".

I had that one and "Hollywood," I think (it had "Plenty of Money & You"). Got the middle one much later.

The 1934 'laughing version' was such a hit that I'm curious: was the 1961 version 'laughing' or 'straight' ?

It was a straight version, a little faster and, alas, not so hot. I kind of like the laughing one because the song is a little corny to begin with and even though Rudy cracked up, it just fits.

In that case, I have a recording of the 1961 version- it just wasn't billed as such.

I can't imagine what compelled Rudy to release the straight versions because... well.. they're pretty awful and the laughing version is so good.

BTW, when I first heard the laughing version, I thought it was done on purpose, like the Okeh Laughing Record.

I've never heard it, but his discography shows a 1941 recording that was issued under the same Victor catalog number as the 1934 "laughing" version.
